The ID.4 was first released back in 2020, and it quickly became a popular model, especially in the US, where people really like their crossovers. But some inherent teething problems still plagued the user experience. Volkswagen, determined to right its wrongs, now introduces the ID.Tiguan to replace the old ID.4 and fixes many, if not all, of the issues the older model had.
The fully electric Tiguan now arrives with a more familiar and mature design, looking a lot more like a Volkswagen. It comes with two battery options and in rear-wheel and all-wheel-drive configurations, similarly to the ID.4. The entry-level variant runs on a 58 kWh battery, providing juice for one motor on the rear axle, producing 190 horsepower.
The 77 kWh battery, on the other hand, can be had with RWD or AWD. The RWD iteration offers 286 hp, while the AWD goes up to 299 hp. The long-range configuration with a 77 kWh battery and RWD is advertised to offer 373 miles of cruising range on a single charge, according to the WLTP cycle. It's a small but notable increase over the corresponding ID.4, which managed 342 miles.
But perhaps the best thing about the ID.Tiguan upgrade is the interior. Physical buttons make a return to the steering wheel and there's a new row of buttons under the main infotainment screen along with a volume knob. Even the rear windows are now controlled via standard keys placed on the driver's door.
The screens inside the car also received some attention, as the instrument cluster display and the main infotainment one are both bigger than before. Volkswagen also added a retro mode that displays the instrument gauge cluster of older VW models. The ID.Polo launched with the same feature.
Moreover, the ID.Tiguan adds one-pedal driving, a frunk, albeit a small one and V2L functionality. Those were all very common, if not standard, features for an EV that the ID.4 lacked.
Volkswagen has officially confirmed that the vehicle will come to the US, but it will probably be after the European launch set for early 2027.
