Volvo Polestar

Samsung is adding support for more brands to the Digital Key feature of its Samsung Wallet app. The latest to join are Volvo and Polestar, previously supported models include Audi, BMW, Mini, Kia and Hyundai (only select models from each brand are supported).

If you have never heard of this before, Digital Key essentially turns your phone into a key for your car – you can lock or unlock it, as well as start the car. This can be done over three wireless technologies. First, UWB (ultra-wideband) gives you hands-free access. Second, NFC enables tap-to-unlock and start. Bluetooth LE is also an option for remote control.

You can use this feature to share a Digital Key for your car with friends and family – and they don’t even need a Galaxy phone to use it. This can come in handy if you want to lend someone your car but aren’t nearby to physically give them the key.

If a phone with a Digital Key is lost or stolen, you can go into Samsung Find and lock or even delete that key. Samsung Wallet will keep the key safe and will require biometric or PIN-based user authentication. Samsung’s Digital Key implementation is rated EAL6+.

Only a couple of new models are supported now, but more will be added in the future. Support for the Volvo EX90 is rolling out this month in Europe, North America, South America and Asia (starting with Australia, Malaysia and Thailand).

Support for the Polestar 3 is also rolling out this month in Europe, North America and Asia (starting with Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong and Singapore).

As the car owner, you will need one of the following series: Galaxy S20, S21 (including FE), S22, S23 (including FE), S24 (and FE), S25. The following Samsung foldables are supported: Z Fold 2 through Z Fold6, Z Flip 5G through Z Flip6. The Galaxy Note 20 and Note 20 Ultra are supported as well. Note that only some of these devices have UWB, you can check the specs over on GSMArena.
