Scout Announcement

Scout Motors has revealed two new electric vehicles aiming to impress off the beaten path. The Scout Traveler SUV and Terra pickup truck represent a bold return to the brand's roots, offering rugged designs and innovative technology. Both vehicles will be available in all-electric and extended-range (EREV) configurations.

The all-electric versions of the Traveler and Terra promise a range of 350 miles, placing them among the top contenders in the EV truck and SUV segment. For those looking for an even greater range, the EREV versions use a gasoline-powered generator, dubbed the "Harvester," bringing the total range to 500 miles. The Harvester functions solely as a generator, charging the battery rather than directly powering the wheels.

The Traveler and Terra feature 800V architecture that supports charging speeds of up to 350 kW. While the company hasn't specified charging times, it's expected that these vehicles will be able to charge from 10% to 80% in well under 30 minutes, potentially even achieving sub-20-minute times. Both models will come standard with the Tesla North American Charging Standard (NACS) plug, granting owners access to the extensive Supercharger network.

The Traveler and Terra are built on a dedicated EV truck platform, featuring a body-on-frame construction favored by off-road enthusiasts. A quad-motor four-wheel-drive system will be available, providing exceptional traction and control. Scout Motors has also confirmed the inclusion of a solid rear axle, a feature prized by hardcore off-roaders and currently unavailable in any other electric off-road vehicle. Additional off-road features include mechanically locking front and rear differentials, over 1 ft of ground clearance, 35-inch tires, and the ability to ford nearly 3.3 ft of water.

With close to 1,000 lb-ft of torque, the quad-motor versions of the Traveler and Terra are estimated to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 3.5 seconds. The Terra pickup truck has a towing capacity of over 10,000 lb, while the Traveler SUV can tow over 7,000 lb. Both vehicles offer a payload capacity of 2,000 lb, exceeding the capabilities of many internal-combustion midsize pickup trucks.

Scout Motors used durable buttons for key controls inside the cabin. The concept images reveal a stylish interior with brown leather/leatherette seats and fabric accents. The Traveler will offer a unique retractable "Cabana Top" that provides a large opening, while a three-person front bench seat will be available as an option.

The Traveler is starting at around $50,000 and the Terra pickup truck begins at $51,500, including potential tax credits. Unfortunately, production isn't expected to begin until 2027 at the company's South Carolina factory, and a lot can change in over two years.

Apart from the trucks themselves, the most interesting bit is that Scout Motors plans to sell the Traveler and Terra directly to consumers. That means eliminating dealer markups and ensuring fixed pricing. While this approach allows the company to establish a closer relationship with its customers and offer a more personalized experience, it's pretty much guaranteed to upset every dealer in the US.
