Tesla offers new incentives to forgo lifetime unlimited Supercharging

Tesla

It seems impossible to a day without mentioning Tesla. If prices don’t go down then they go up, margin profits go low then share prices fall. It’s quite something for a company that does not have an official PR department and only relies on its controversial CEO to keep the world in the loop.

The latest news comes courtesy of the pioneering customers who bought one of the first Model S or Model X back in the day. They were enticed with an offer of free charging for life. Every Model S and Model X came with free access to the Supercharger network for until it's running.

Once Tesla started selling enough cars and the Model 3 was introduced, the company discontinued the offer. Those who bought their car before 2018 kept their free charging though, which means there are a few hundred thousand of Teslas out there still qualifying for the free charging.

It must be hurting Tesla’s bottom end because earlier this year the company tried enticing the customers away from their precious perks. Anyone trading either Model S or Model X with the free Supercharging was offered an extra $5,000 discount on a new car. It seems not many people took the offer though.

The company is now offering an additional perk to those willing to give up their Supercharger benefit. Anyone trading the older Tesla for the new Model S or Model X will be given free Supercharging for 6 years. The company stresses that to qualify for this offer, either the vehicle has to be traded for the new one or the free Supercharging has to be removed from the existing vehicle.

That last bit means that anyone wanting to buy a new Model S or X and wanting to keep their old Tesla can do so but have a choice to make. Keep the free charging for the old car or get it for the new car but only for 6 years.

It sounds like an interesting deal. The current Teslas are definitely much better than the ones from before 2018. The issue is that the current models are cheaper thanks to Elon’s price cut campaign which resulted in much lower prices for the used models. On the other hand, getting a new Tesla with 6 years of free charging and giving up the old one with plenty of miles driven can be perfect timing for many owners.
