The other day Elon Musk officially acknowledged that HW3 is just not enough to support the Full Self-Driving feature that many Tesla owners bought years ago, which caused severe backlash. More than 3,000 European owners are now looking to take legal action against Tesla since the company promised that HW3-equipped cars will run FSD eventually.
In response, Tesla announced that it will offer FSD V14 Lite for HW3 owners, which is essentially a stripped-down version of the full-fledged FSD. It's unclear what the differences will be as both are Level 2 driver-assistance system that require constant human supervision.
Additionally, the official statement says the rollout to international customers will begin only after the rollout for the US Tesla owners is complete. The US rollout is scheduled to commence by the end of June, but if you factor in technical verification, regional adaptation and relevant regulatory approvals, European customers will likely get FSD V14 Lite months or even a year after the US rollout.
Just a few days ago, Elon Musk announced a different solution to the problem - micro factories that will retrofit HW3 vehicles with HW4 chips and newer cameras. Since this is a costly endeavor, it's not clear whether Tesla will actually do that.
It also begs the question whether HW4-equipped vehicles will see the same fate as their HW3 predecessors as the company recently announced a new version of its car brain.
