Toyota teases new electric crossover with "surprising" features

Toyota is almost ready to reveal a new electric crossover on March 11. The vehicle, teased with a single image and short video, appears to be the production version of the bZ Compact SUV concept showcased in 2022. Although the video states the reveal is taking place on March 12th, Toyota's own press release claims it'll take place on March 11th - it probably depends on which time zone you'll be in.

The teaser materials highlight a sleek, fastback design with distinct curves along the hips and front fenders. The low roofline and seemingly raised body suggest a focus on both style and a dynamic driving experience. Toyota hints at "surprising space, comfort and versatility," along with a strong emotional appeal, hoping to capture the hearts of drivers seeking more than just basic transportation.

Toyota remains tight-lipped about the name, but speculation suggests it may move away from the "bZ" nomenclature, following rumors that even the bZ4X might adopt a more conventional name. Technical specifications are also scarce at this point. However, the dimensions of the 2022 concept offer some clues about the vehicle's size. The concept measured 178.74 inches in length and 61.42 inches in height. If the production model stays close to these dimensions, it will be quite a bit smaller and lower than the existing Toyota bZ4X, by about 5.9 inches shorter and 3.54 inches lower.

The concept's dimensions place it in a similar size category to other compact electric cars. While specifics on the battery and motor are yet to be released, Toyota's smaller Urban Cruiser electric SUV can provide some clues. The Urban Cruiser offers battery options of 49 kWh and 61 kWh. The single-motor, front-wheel-drive versions deliver 142 hp with the smaller battery and 172 hp with the larger one. A dual-motor powertrain option increases the output to 182 hp. It makes a lot of sense for the new crossover to share the powertrain with its sibling.
