Volvo EX90 to get the ES90's 800V architecture and Nvidia Orin platform

Volvo

Volvo just announced the ES90 sedan, and it uses an 800V architecture, which enables faster DC charging than the EX90's 400V one. But not for long.

The company is planning on upgrading the EX90 with the 800V architecture to bring it on par with the ES90. This upgrade will come "in one of the model-year changes" in the future, according to Volvo Cars CEO Jim Rowan. If you're wondering just when, it won't be very soon as "it's a pretty new car", Rowan says. So in a year or two, most likely.

In some markets like the UK, the first EX90 models are just now being delivered to customers, despite the fact that the EV was announced back in 2022. The EX90 will also get "an imminent hardware upgrade" to install the Nvidia Drive AGC Orin platform found in the ES90. Unlike the architecture switch, this won't require you to buy a new EX90, it will be a retrofit. And free.

The reason for adopting 800V in future EX90s has to do with intense competition from Chinese brands, which are more and more using 800V and above. Once the new ES90 launches with the 800V architecture, you'll be able to add about 186 miles of range in 10 minutes at the fastest DC chargers.

Using the ES90's charging curve as an example, this could mean going from 10% to 80% in 20 minutes, and having a peak charging rate of about 350kW, up from 250kW in the current EX90.

The recently teased EX60 will use the 800V tech as well.
