XPeng unveils P7+, world's first "AI vehicle"

At the Apsara Conference 2024 in Hangzhou, XPeng made a surprise entrance as CEO He Xiaopeng personally drove a camouflaged prototype of the much-anticipated P7+. The car had "world's first AI vehicle" emblazoned on its side.

The P7+, a significant evolution from its predecessor, the P7i, boasts a larger, sleeker body, measuring an impressive 16.6 ft in length, 6.36 ft in width, and 4.95 ft in height. Built on XPeng's innovative SEPA 2.0 platform, the P7+ promises enhanced efficiency.

A key highlight of the P7+ is its camera-based vision system for autonomous driving. This shift away from LiDAR technology aligns with Tesla's approach to Full Self-Driving. XPeng's vision is to create a truly AI-powered vehicle, and the P7+ appears to be a step in that direction.

The P7+ will be available with two powertrain options: a 180 kW (241 horsepower) motor for the base model and a more powerful 230 kW (308 horsepower) version. Both motors are manufactured at XPeng's Wuhan facility. The base model tips the scales at 4,336 lb, while the higher-spec version weighs in at 4,570 lb.

From a design standpoint, the P7+ adopts a coupe-style silhouette, which is expected to enhance its aerodynamic performance and reduce drag. The rear features a unique "C"-shaped taillight design. In a nod to its technological prowess, the P7+ even incorporates cameras within its rear taillights.

While the P7+ will be powered by lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries sourced from Eve Power, detailed battery specifications are still under wraps. Production is set to take place at XPeng's Guangzhou factory, with the car slated for release in the fourth quarter of 2024.

XPeng's current lineup includes various electric vehicles, such as the P7i, P5, and Mona M03 sedans, the G6 and G9 crossovers, and the X9 minivan. With sales of the once-popular P7i on the decline, the P7+ represents a pivotal opportunity for XPeng to refresh its electric sedan offerings.
