The modern EV interior is a temple of clean lines and big screens. Yet, there's one small snake that ruins this minimalist garden in a number of cars: the USB cable. That messy, tangled tether linking our phones to our dashboards is a must for using Apple CarPlay or Android Auto in a long list of models.
AAWireless made a name for itself with the AAWireless adapter, the second version of which we reviewed and loved.AAWireless sold over 500,000 of its adapters so far and it's about to boost that number significantly.
Its latest product is the AAWireless TWO+. It's a single, 2-in-1 device that plugs into your car's USB port and delivers both wireless Apple CarPlay and wireless Android Auto. This means a driver with an iPhone can use the system, and then a passenger with an Android phone can take over navigation or music, all without touching a single wire. And it seems customers couldn't wait for this - an early-access launch on Indiegogo saw 3,000 units fly off the virtual shelves in just five days.
The TWO+ promises convenience and versatility. The device has a multifunctional button, allowing you to switch between connected phones with a simple press. AAWireless also supports the device with its own companion app. This app allows for regular over-the-air (OTA) firmware updates. This ensures the adapter can keep up with new phone software or car system quirks. In an era where EVs get new features overnight, it's good to see small accessories following the same practice.
The company highlights several real-world scenarios for the TWO+. On a long road trip, friends can easily swap who controls the playlist, regardless of their phone's operating system. For a busy parent on the school run, the system connects instantly. The phone can stay in a pocket or a bag, removing one small hassle from a hectic routine. The TWO+ also automatically reconnects when you get back in the car. A delivery driver, for example, can step out with their phone and have maps and contacts immediately reappear on the car's screen upon returning, with no delay.
Before you rush to buy one, there are important details - this device is not a magic wand for every car. It is designed only for cars that already have wired Android Auto or wired Apple CarPlay supplied by the manufacturer. If your car is older and doesn't have either system, the TWO+ cannot help you. Likewise, if your new car already supports a wireless connection, this device is obviously not necessary. For Apple CarPlay to work, your phone needs to be an iPhone X or a newer model. For Android Auto, the phone must run Android 11 or higher and, in a classic Google move, must be on Google's official support list.
The AAWireless TWO+ is now rolling out to a wider audience. Drivers in the European Union can purchase the device for €59.99, while customers in the United States can get it for $64.99 via the official AAWireless Webshop. Drivers in the UK will have to wait a little longer, as availability is listed as "coming soon." And of course, as soon as we get our hands on one, there will be a full review coming your way.
