First electric Corvette is coming in 2025 and it’s not what you think

The world is already upset about the all-electric Dodge Charger and now the Chevy fans are getting a hard pill to swallow. The disdain for electric drive among the Corvette fans is so strong that when one of the hybrid Corvettes caught fire last week, the forums broke out in spontaneous celebrations.

The rumors floating around talk about the electric Corvette becoming an SUV to square off against the Mustang Mach-E. Some talk about the Chevrolet Camaro turning into an electric 4-door sedan. Let’s have a closer look.

First of all we are getting no electric Vette C8. There will be hybrid models for sure and at least two different models with Chevrolet securing E-Ray and Zora nameplates for the upcoming cars. The all electric Corvette is coming though, and it starts looking like the C9 is the one to make the swap from combustion to electricity.

The rumor of electric Camaro is actually the giveaway for the next electric Corvette - while the world was getting excited about the idea of high performance sedan wearing the Camaro name, Chevrolet confirmed that it has no plans for electric Camaro. But the plans for a performance 4-door electric sedan are on the table.

Enter the all-electric Corvette C9. GM is preparing a high performance electric sedan with the Corvette badge on it and it will be in the showrooms some time in 2025. Corvette designers are not interested in taking on Mustang Mach-E GT, they want to take on Porsche Taycan. Corvette is a performance and luxury brand and its natural competition is Porsche, BMW and Mercedes.

Electrification has given Chevrolet a great opportunity to expand the Corvette brand and the 4-door sedan looks like a logical next step. Ultium architecture from GM is highly flexible and can offer huge performance with 1,000 horsepower readily available, large batteries will offer a competitive range. This is the first time in history we will see the Corvette badge on more cars.

More cars? Yes, turns out the sedan is not the only Corvette planned, the next model is quite obvious but nevertheless it’s really hard to comprehend by the Corvette fan base and it’s the one that upsets people the most. The Corvette will come as an SUV. The only relief here for the fans is that this project is being delayed.

It will share the underpinnings with Chevrolet Blazer EV SS and the company wants to make sure the Blazer gets a fair chance to rope in new customers. The Blazer will need a fair amount of room to breathe before its most likely more powerful cousin arrives. Corvette SUV will be aimed at Porsche, BMW and Mercedes again and is expected some time toward the end of this decade.

One day, two different news items caused shockwaves for fans of iconic American automotive brands. Hemi is gone, Corvette is going all electric, it must feel like the world is ending.
