Android Auto is about to get a lot smarter at handling your calls

Google

It's a modern driver's dilemma. You are navigating traffic, and the car's large infotainment screen lights up with an incoming call from an unknown number. Is it the school nurse, or is it another one of those persistent robocallers hawking extended warranties? Answering could be a waste of time, but ignoring it could mean missing something important. Google is now rolling out a solution to this problem by bringing two of its smartest Pixel phone features directly to your car's dashboard via Android Auto.

The first feature landing soon in our cars is Call Screen. This clever tool helps to eliminate the guesswork of answering unknown numbers while on the road. Google Pixel phone owners use this feature to have the Google Assistant screen their calls. Now, that same power is coming to the car.

When an unrecognized number calls you through Android Auto, you will have the option to let Google screen it. The system will ask the caller for their name and the reason for their call. This information is then transcribed and displayed on your car's screen in real-time, allowing you to decide whether to answer or decline without ever speaking to the person.

The next feature is designed to help you with the calls you have to take. Arriving later this year is Call Notes, a function that essentially acts as your personal assistant during a phone call. We've all been there: taking a call from a client or a doctor's office while driving, trying desperately to memorize key details, addresses, or instructions because you can't safely write them down. Call Notes solves this by using AI to automatically summarize your conversation.

First introduced on the Pixel 9 series of smartphones, Call Notes will listen to your conversation and generate a concise text summary of the key points and action items. This means drivers can focus completely on the road while taking an important work or personal call, confident that the important takeaways will be captured for them to review later.

For the growing number of people who use their vehicle as a mobile office, this feature transforms dead driving time into productive, yet safe, work time. The ability to have an entire conversation automatically transcribed and summarized is a powerful tool for on-the-go professionals.

Google also announced it is expanding its call recording capabilities and bringing features like Scam Detection and Call Notes to more markets globally, in a clear strategy to integrate its helpful AI into every part of a user's day, whether they are at home or behind the wheel.

Automated answer sounds not so functional in practice but, call notes might be a life saver for some calls. there should be an option to trigger while answering the call and while we are talking on the call
