Tesla increases price of Full Self Driving Capability in Canada

Canadians woke up this morning to find out that the price of Tesla’s Full Self Driving Capability (FSD) has gone up by CA$2,200. It wasn’t cheap to begin with at CA$10,600, but now those who didn’t take advantage of lower pricing will have to shell out CA$12,800 which actually brings in line with the price south of the Canadian border.

Many people took to social media complaining that the price hike came unannounced and argued that it wasn’t justified either, with hardly any improvements to the system itself. The situation in Canada is slightly different than in the US where Tesla has had plenty of time and many miles covered by Beta users helped the automaker to teach the Neural Network that runs the system. That solution is causing issues in Canada with a clearly smaller user group and much less data available, which has a clear impact on the quality of the FSD in that country.

FSD (Full Self Driving) is a paid option - in the US it’s either $12,000 or $200 monthly subscription - and it builds on top of the Autopilot. The standard Autopilot included in Tesla vehicles can steer the car within the lane and slow down or accelerate according to the traffic or obstacles, it’s like a more powerful version of auto cruise control.

The FSD on the other hand can take full control of the car and take it from a start point to its destination but with the driver still required to pay attention. It can change lanes automatically if the traffic flows faster in the next lane and it can change lanes if the driver puts the blinker on. FSD can fully park the car either in a parallel or perpendicular parking spot, completely hands off.

A popular if not quite as useful feature feature is Smart Summon where the car can drive on its own from the parking spot to where the driver is. The Beta users of FSD have access to City Streets AUtosteer which as the name suggests, allows the system to navigate through the cities. This part of the software has been recently completely overhauled and only a select group of users have access to it for now.

Elon Musk has promised that an updated FSD will come by the end of 2022 with all the functions from Beta available.
