Volkswagen VW

VW will officially unveil its smallest electric SUV at the IAA motor show in Munich in September, CEO Thomas Schäfer has revealed today. He went one step further and also confirmed the upcoming car's name: ID.2X (previously known as the ID.2all SUV). He also shared the rough outline you can see in the image below.

This will be part of the VW group's Electric Urban Car Family, which also comprises the ID.2, Cupra Raval, and Skoda Epiq. All of these will be made in the same factory near Barcelona in Spain. Think of the ID.2 as the EV Polo, and of the ID.2X as a replacement for the T-Cross.

The ID.2X is expected to be a higher-riding sibling to the ID.2, catering to the all-important small SUV market segment in Europe. The ID.2X will use the same shortened version of VW's MEB platform as the ID.2.

According to Autocar, the ID.2X will be offered with a single motor at the front, which will develop 223bhp. It will come with two batteries: 38 kWh and 56 kWh. The latter should be good enough for a WLTP range of about 280 miles. The larger battery will charge at up to 125 kW DC, going from 10% to 80% in 20 minutes.

The ID.2X will be around 161.4 inches long, with a wheelbase of 102.4 inches, and will offer more than the ID.2's 17.3 ft³ of trunk/boot space. On the inside, it should be nigh-on identical to the ID.2, with a 12.9" infotainment screen and a 10.9" digital driver display. Climate and audio controls will use physical switches.

The ID.2 is expected to cost around £22,000 or €25,000, and the ID.2X should be about £25,000 or €30,000.
