Xiaomi YU7 spotted testing as launch approaches

There are many electric SUVs on the market, and every one of them claims to be the Model Y slayer. Yet the YU7 from Xiaomi is shaping up to be the one that can actually steal the Model Y's crown.

The YU7 was spotted undergoing road tests in Guangxi, China. Set for a mid-2025 launch, this good-looking electric SUV promises an attractive combination of performance and technology, coupled with Xiaomi's trademark competitive price point.

The spy photos offer the first live look into the YU7's striking design. Its long hood and sleek profile have drawn comparisons to the Ferrari Purosangue, while still maintaining its own distinct identity. The front fascia boasts aggressive cooling vents, a prominent front lip, and headlights integrated with functional air ducts.

A very slim LiDAR sensor mounted on the roof hints at the vehicle's ADAS capabilities. Flush-mounted door handles, a panoramic glass roof, and aerodynamically designed alloy wheels, all contribute to the vehicle's efficiency. At the rear, a U-shaped LED light bar, dual spoilers, and a diffuser with air outlets point to YU7's sporty personality.

Details about the interior remain scarce, but earlier leaks suggest a futuristic and minimalist cabin resembling its SU7 sibling. A curved display spanning the dashboard, a three-spoke steering wheel, and a large central touchscreen are expected to dominate the interior layout. The emphasis on a clean aesthetic is reinforced by the minimal use of physical buttons.

The Xiaomi YU7 will be available in both single-motor rear-wheel-drive and dual-motor all-wheel-drive configurations. The AWD version features a 220 kW front motor and a 288 kW rear motor. The combined output of 508 kW (681 hp) results in a top speed of 157 mph. It's expected to offer a range of up to 472 miles (CLTC) on a single charge, thanks to a CATL ternary lithium battery. The RWD variant uses a 235 kW (315 hp) rear motor and an LFP battery, achieving a top speed of 149 mph.

Originally rumored for a March 2025 release, the YU7's launch was pushed back to mid-2025 to coincide with the expansion of Xiaomi's manufacturing facilities. With an anticipated starting price of around RMB 250,000 (approximately $34,200), the YU7 will put some serious pressure on the Tesla Model Y and other electric SUVs like the Zeekr 7X and Avatr 07.
