XPeng and Huawei reimagine driving displays

Chinese electric car maker XPeng, teaming up with tech giant Huawei, unveiled a new Augmented Reality Heads-Up Display, or AR-HUD, which will debut in XPeng's upcoming G7 SUV. XPeng claims it's the first time such a display will work hand-in-hand with a car's artificial intelligence for smarter driving.

AR-HUD is essentially a giant, see-through screen projected onto your windshield. XPeng says this system, unlike the standard HUD, creates a display area that feels like looking at an 87-inch TV. Instead of glancing down at your dashboard or a central screen, information like your speed, navigation directions, and updates from the car's smart driving system appear directly in your line of sight. This could mean less time with your eyes off the road, which is always a good thing. The system is designed to show road conditions and even how the car's autonomous driving features are working.

XPeng states the display can reach a brightness of up to 12,000 nits and has a contrast ratio of 1,800:1. In simpler terms, this means the information on your windshield should be easy to see, whether it's a sunny day or a dark night.

While Huawei handles the "how it looks," XPeng brings its expertise in electric car software and artificial intelligence to decide "what it shows" and "when to show it." XPeng's algorithms analyze the road, try to predict what other vehicles might do, and then show personalized information to the driver.

One of the biggest selling points for this new AR-HUD is its connection to safety and smart driving. The system merges what you see on the screen with the real world outside. For example, navigation instructions can appear as if they are painted onto the actual road lanes ahead.

When the car's smart driving system is active, the HUD can visually tell the driver what the car plans to do next. It also offers features to help in tricky situations. If it's raining hard or foggy, the display can highlight the position of the car in front of you or show the lane markings more clearly. It can also provide warnings if you're approaching a turn too fast, based on your speed and the road conditions.

The collaboration between XPeng and Huawei on the AR-HUD raises interesting points about the future of how we interact with our electric cars. As EVs get more packed with technology, the way information is presented to the driver is becoming ever more important. Projecting vital data directly onto the windshield, augmented with AI-driven insights, could make driving simpler and potentially safer.
