Toyota teases FT-3e and FT-Se EV concepts

Toyota

Toyota, a titan in the auto world, just dangled a bit of electric carrot in front of us. In preparation for the upcoming Japan Mobility Show 2023 in Tokyo, Toyota released teaser images of two electric concepts.

The first one is Toyota FT-3e. Toyota describes it as "SUV-like" and it promises to "enrich customers’ daily lives with new driving experiences and personalized services powered by innovative technologies." Clear as mud, right? Toyota seems to hint at cutting-edge personalization features and top-tier tech, but we'll have to sit tight for the specifics - although it all smells of subscriptions.

Visually speaking, the FT-3e is a feast of sharp angles. The full-width LED strip at the rear is especially eye-catching, stretching to the middle of the rear fenders. We also spot side-mounted displays on the door, which apparently relay details like battery charge, interior temperature, and air quality. From the glimpses, the FT-3e looks like a four-door vehicle. But, true to teaser form, Toyota’s leaving us in a bit of suspense.

Then there’s the FT-Se. This two-door electric coupe clearly borrowed a few style pointers from the iconic Supra. Showcasing the Gazoo Racing (GR) logo, the vibrant orange FT-Se might sit on the same platform and possibly use identical batteries and motors. But remember, it's all speculation for now. Interestingly, a while back, the GR division hinted at an electric sports car equipped with a manual transmission. Could the FT-Se be that car? And will it come with simulated internal combustion engine noises? Toyota remains tight-lipped.

Design aficionados will love this: one FT-Se image reveals what seems like a modern nod to the wraparound dashboard of the legendary A80 Supra from the '90s. That car was a cult classic among JDM enthusiasts, primarily for its easily tweakable 3.0-liter inline-six gasoline engine - the glorious JZ.

Toyota offers sneak peek at the future of its EVs with FT-3e and FT-Se Concepts

The first EVs, based on Toyota's next-gen platform, are expected to hit roads by late 2025. They're touted to run over 497 miles on a charge and recharge from 10 to 80% in approximately 20 minutes via a DC fast charger. Impressive, isn't it?

As for the cost, Toyota claims its next-generation lithium-ion battery will be about 20% cheaper than the current one in the bZ4X crossover. By 2026 or 2027, there's potential for a Lithium Iron Phosphate variant that offers over 372 miles range. Solid-state batteries are being brewed as well, with a planned market introduction by 2027 or 2028.
